i wanted to stay in, but was craving some steak – tango sur style. bought some wine, and flank steak was on sale at mariano’s! so here’s a good substitute if you’re looking for something simple to make but can’t get out to a steakhouse.
this was delicious, flavorful, and filling, and we had some leftovers for steak salad today!

balsamic glazed steak
adapted from my fiance likes it so it must be good!
prep time: 2 hrs | total time: 30 min | serves: 3-4 (depending on size)
what you need:
- 1 lb flank steak
- 2 tablespoons olive oil
- butter
- 2 garlic cloves, minced
- 1/2 onion, diced
- 1 cup balsamic vinegar
- 1/2 cup chicken stock
- 2 tablespoons soy sauce
- ground mustard, cumin, salt, pepper, cayenne, paprika, sugar
- melt butter in a saucepan over med-high heat – add garlic and onions and saute for about 3-5 minutes
- add balsamic vinegar and bring to boil – then reduce and let it simmer
- add pinches of sugar, ground mustard, cumin, salt, pepper, cayenne, paprika with chicken stock and soy sauce and bring to boil again
- let it cool and marinate the meat for at least 1-2 hours, reserve a bit of the liquid for the finished steak
- heat a large skillet over med-high heat and add olive oil, garlic, and onions
- add steak and cook to your liking (we eat med rare, so about 5-6 minutes each side)
- let steak rest on cutting board for 5-10 minutes before you slice
- heat up remaining marinade and serve with veggies! (i did with creamed spinach and homemade fries)
